About the institution
The Technical University in Ostrava trains specialists in industrial and civil engineering, labour protection, mechanics, electrical engineering, computer technology, mining and geology, metallurgy, economics.
Brief information
The University was established on the basis of the School of Mining and Geology founded by imperial decree in 1849 in Příbram. In 1945, the university was moved to Ostrava.
Due to its orientation towards the training of mining specialists, the university is a member of the Czech Mining Technology Association.
The Faculty of Economics of VSB - TUO is rated as the second in the country after the Faculty of the Prague University of Economics.
The university co-operates closely with industrial companies.
A large percentage of students at this university receive grants.
The largest science and technology centre in the Moravian-Silesian region was opened at the university, which regularly employs hundreds of graduates.
Every year the university organises the largest job fair in the Czech Republic, where students can meet employers, have interviews and get a job.
The University has an excellent material and technical base and a highly professional teaching staff.
The scientific and laboratory base of the university includes laboratories of nanotechnology, mechanical testing of friction composite materials, mathematical modelling of physical and chemical properties of polymeric materials.
The VSB - TUO campus is one of the largest in Central Europe. In addition to academic buildings, there are dormitories, cafes, canteens, sports grounds and clubs, post office, shops, gallery, library and night clubs.
The university is very popular with international students.
It offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral programmes at 7 faculties and 2 university study programmes.
Conditions for admission of foreign applicants
Providing a certificate of Czech language proficiency at the B2 level (for some specialities B1 is sufficient). The admission committee works in two stages.
